Enhancing massage with cupping therapy

It’s great to learn and provide new techniques in client care, and this blog focuses on cupping therapy.

Cupping therapy is a technique that has been used for centuries and is now commonly integrated into modern massage and sports therapy treatments. I'm pleased to now offer cupping as part of my ongoing professional development, allowing treatments to be even more targeted and effective.

Unlike traditional massage, which works by applying pressure into the tissues, cupping uses controlled suction to gently lift the skin and underlying structures. This can help improve circulation, reduce muscular tension, and support the body's natural healing processes.

When used alongside massage, cupping can be particularly beneficial for:

  • Muscle tightness and restricted movement

  • Sports injuries and overuse strains

  • Postural tension

  • Chronic aches where tissue feels ‘stuck’ or unresponsive

Cupping may be applied dynamically (moving cups across the skin) or statically for short periods over specific areas of concern. This approach allows deeper layers of tissue to be addressed without excessive pressure, making it suitable for many clients who find deep massage uncomfortable.

Temporary marks can occur, depending on the individual and the area treated. These are not painful and typically fade within a few days. This will always be discussed prior to treatment.

Cupping is used as part of a holistic, client-focused approach, enhancing the overall effectiveness of massage while remaining safe, considered and tailored to individual needs.
