Children are our future

When many individuals think about physiotherapy treatment, they assume only adults need our help. Alternatively, sports injuries may conjure up views of younger folk who are active in competitive sports or those that enjoy hobbies such as mountain biking or jogging. The treatment of sports injuries can be very different to pain and reduced function due to skeletal malfunction. Sports injuries can often stem from dysfunction established at an early and age, and not necessarily from a specific incident in later years.

Children’s Physiotherapy needs

It is easy to overlook children, over the age of 9, who have physiotherapy needs, which sometimes are not identified until some harm has been done. Wellbeing for all is not age restricted after all.

As with adults, each person, irrespective of their age is an individual, with individual needs when considering the need for physiotherapy care.

Why is physiotherapy different for children / young adults?

Children and young adults are constantly growing and developing within their frame. 21st century children are also pushing themselves harder and faster than ever before, creating injuries only previously seen in adults. The initial contact with a physiotherapist might be to address a specific injury or to resolve a mild nagging pain that prevents the child from participating in everyday life activities. On assessment, goals are set with the child and family to help maximise their physical potential. A physiotherapist will assess a child’s flexibility, posture, movement, mobility and muscle strength. It is important that any Physiotherapy programme is tailored to helping the young person maintain their strengths, whilst developing in other areas of weakness. Therefore, creating a holistic approach to rehabilitation.

The physiotherapy process is not just limited to an individual session or sessions of care, it may also require referral onto other professions such as podiatrists, orthotists or occupational therapists. It is our aim to help children through their growth spurts, and individual obstacles to achieve their optimal physical development and not let dysfunction from youth affect their adult life.
