Don’t shoulder instability or discomfort!

Why control and coordination matter

Appreciating that you many may not think about this topic very often (perhaps unless you are a physiotherapist!): the shoulder is an incredible joint, providing a huge range of movement. This is why it can be difficult for some to keep the shoulder joint stable. Unlike a simple hinge, the shoulder works more like a ball sitting in a shallow saucer. This natural design means it relies heavily on muscle control and body awareness (sometimes referenced as proprioception) to stay stable and work smoothly.

If things go wrong and the muscles around your shoulder don’t fire at the right time, or don’t work in balance, it can lead to instability or discomfort. That’s why coordination and timing of muscle activation are just as important as strength. Simple strengthening alone isn’t always enough; your shoulder also needs practice sensing its position and reacting appropriately, and this is where some professional help may be needed.

Through the care that Life Made Simple Physiotherapy can offer, we focus on exercises that improve both stability and coordination. This can include gentle low-load exercises, functional movements that mimic daily activities, and proprioceptive exercises that challenge your shoulder to respond to movement and resistance. Tools like resistance bands or slightly unstable surfaces can add subtle challenges that train your shoulder to react and stabilize naturally.

In addition, we also look at the scapula (shoulder blade), which plays a key role in shoulder movement. Sometimes scapula movement can be altered, but it’s important to assess its relevance in the context of your overall shoulder function rather than assuming it’s always the cause of pain.

Everyday shoulder care can make a big difference too. Simple habits like maintaining good posture, avoiding prolonged slouching, and incorporating short mobility or strengthening breaks during the day can help your shoulder stay coordinated and strong. Even small, consistent movements can train your muscles to work together more efficiently and reduce the risk of discomfort or injury.

If your shoulder feels unstable, painful, or just not as strong as it used to, targeted exercises and guided physiotherapy can make a huge difference. At Life Made Simple Physiotherapy, we’re here to help you build shoulder strength, stability, and confidence, so you can get back to the activities you love without concern.
