We have looked in the past on our topical blog pages at possible stretches and in the past some ‘exercises of the month’ that can be used to help muscular or skeletal ailments. With the summer ahead and perhaps the great outdoors beckoning, managing skeletal pain may be ever more important.

Hip pain is a common complaint that we receive as chartered physiotherapists, but can it be managed? Those individuals who suffer from this often-persistent pain will need no explanation as to its restrictive effects.

Ongoing personal experience

One patient gave the following explanation of her ongoing personal experience:

I have suffered from hip pain for around six years, with nerve pain radiating from my back into the hip and down the leg. Alongside this there are other issues affecting my hip joints. On ‘bad days’, the pain limits my ability to exercise and even to sleep. However, treatment through Life Made Simple Physiotherapy has made a huge difference – physio, acupuncture and recommended stretches have really helped to relieve the pain, allowing me to sleep better and exercise more.

Mrs F, Woking

A real testament to the debilitating effects of hip pain and to what can be achieved through targeted individual treatment.

Can self-management & careful exercise work?

In some cases, the answer is yes. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has looked at this very issue, along with other agencies (supported by NHS England), and a link to their notes and findings can be found here: https://www.csp.org.uk/conditions/managing-pain-home/managing-your-hip-pain

These helpful notes detail how self-management can help over a period of six to eight weeks, although some may suffer for longer, and of course an onward referral to a specialist maybe required if symptoms do not improve.

You will see from the link that there other helpful insights into managing your bone, joint or muscle pain and the link for this can be found here: https://www.csp.org.uk/conditions/managing-pain-home
